How Compass Uses AI

Last updated: February 2026

Metis Compass uses artificial intelligence to help you find digital workplace tools and strategies that fit your unique situation. We believe transparency about how AI is used builds trust, so this page explains what Compass does with AI, what it doesn’t do, and how we keep you in control.

What AI Does in Compass

Compass uses AI in two specific places within the application:

  1. Your Compass Summary — After you complete your context assessment, AI generates a personalised summary of your workplace situation. This summary reflects what you told us about your challenges, work environment, energy levels, and preferences. It is grounded in the Metis Knowledge Base, which contains curated, evidence-based research on neurodiversity in the workplace.
  2. Your Tool Recommendations — Once you confirm your summary, AI searches for digital workplace tools that match your specific setup. Recommendations are filtered by your IT constraints, energy levels, and support preferences to ensure they are feasible and manageable.

What AI Does Not Do

  • Compass does not diagnose. We do not provide clinical diagnoses, medical assessments, or psychological evaluations. Compass is a workplace support tool, not a healthcare service.
  • Compass does not profile you. We do not build persistent profiles, track you across sessions, or use your data to make inferences about you beyond what you explicitly share.
  • Compass does not report to anyone. Your employer, manager, or any third party does not have access to your assessment data or recommendations. This is your private space.
  • Compass does not make decisions for you. All recommendations are suggestions. You have full agency over which tools you explore, and you can change your inputs at any time to see different results.

Our AI Principles

All AI-generated content in Compass follows these principles:

  • Neuro-affirming: We treat neurodivergence as a difference, not a deficit. AI content frames challenges as environmental mismatches rather than personal failings.
  • Strength-based: We highlight what is working, not just what is hard. Recommendations focus on practical support that builds on your existing capabilities.
  • Non-clinical: We use clear, everyday language. No jargon, no clinical terminology, no diagnostic labels unless you choose to share them.
  • Provisional: We use language like “you might notice” and “some people find” rather than making definitive claims about your experience.
  • Transparent: We explain why each recommendation was made and what factors influenced it. The “Why we recommend what we do” section makes our reasoning visible.
  • Respectful of autonomy: We suggest options, not instructions. You are the expert on your own experience.

How Your Data is Processed

  • Your assessment responses are sent to an AI service (OpenAI) to generate your summary and recommendations.
  • The AI processes your responses in real time and does not retain your data after generating a response.
  • Your data is not used to train AI models.
  • Assessment data is stored locally in your browser and is not permanently saved to our servers unless you explicitly choose to create an account (feature coming soon).
  • You can clear all locally stored data at any time by using the “Start over” option or clearing your browser data.

The Metis Knowledge Base

Compass grounds its AI responses in the Metis Knowledge Base (MKB) — a curated collection of evidence-based research on neurodiversity, workplace strategies, assistive technology, and legal frameworks. The MKB is maintained by Metis Solutions and includes peer-reviewed academic research, clinical guidance, government policy documents, and professional best practices. This grounding helps ensure that AI responses are informed by credible evidence rather than general internet content.

Limitations

Like all AI systems, Compass has limitations:

  • AI-generated summaries and recommendations may not perfectly reflect your situation. That is why we ask you to confirm your summary before proceeding.
  • Tool recommendations are based on the AI’s knowledge and may not include every relevant option available.
  • Compass cannot account for factors you do not share with it. The more context you provide, the more relevant the results.
  • AI responses should not be treated as professional advice. For clinical, legal, or medical guidance, please consult an appropriate professional.

Your Control

You are always in control of your Compass experience:

  • You choose what information to share. Section E (Identity) is entirely optional.
  • You can review, edit, and correct your summary before seeing recommendations.
  • You can adjust your inputs and regenerate results at any time.
  • You can clear all your data and start fresh whenever you like.
